Ways to Check the Status of Your Disability Appeal

Online Through Your My Social Security Account

The fastest and easiest way to check your appeal status is through the Social Security Administration’s website.

  • Go to www.ssa.gov/myaccount
  • Log in or create a “My Social Security” account
  • View real-time updates on your appeal, including:
  • Which step your appeal is in
  • Whether SSA is waiting on any documents
  • Notifications if your case moves to a hearing

Pro Tip: Enable email or text alerts so you don’t miss important updates.

Call the Social Security Administration (SSA)

You can also speak to a representative directly for appeal status updates.

  • Call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778)
  • Available Monday–Friday, 8 AM–7 PM
  • Have your Social Security Number and appeal filing date ready

This option is helpful if you need clarification or if online tools are down.

Contact Your Local SSA Office

If you prefer speaking to someone in person or need to drop off documents:

  • Use the SSA’s Office Locator to find your nearest office
  • Call or visit during business hours
  • Ask to speak to someone familiar with disability claims or hearings

Speak With Your Disability Attorney (If You Have One)

If you’re working with an attorney or advocate, they can check the status for you—and may get updates more quickly through SSA’s attorney communication channels.

  • Ask them to give you regular updates
  • They can also advise if there are delays or issues with your appeal

What You'll See in the Appeal Status

Depending on which stage of appeal you’re in, your status might say:

  • “Pending Reconsideration”
  • “Hearing Scheduled”
  • “Decision Pending”
  • “Appeals Council Review”

If anything is missing—like medical records—you’ll be notified so you can respond quickly and avoid delays.
